Accelerated Reader
Accelerated ReaderThe Accelerated Reader Program (AR) is a computer learning information system that helps motivate, monitor, and manage student reading practice. A student selects a book, reads it, and takes a short quiz on a computer (multiple choice).
If you came to the elementary library at 8:00 any morning of the week, you would see on the average two dozen students logging on to the computers, taking quizzes, checking out books, and exclaiming "Yes!, 10 out of 10!"
What's all the buzz about? Accelerated Reader!
Second through twelfth graders are busy reading books from Amelia Bedelia to Wuthering Heights. Enthusiasm for reading is great and the program is reaping benefits. Students are recommending books to classmates. It's a joy to see children reading C.S. Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Newbery Award books. For the most part, students are keeping up with their reading, and many are earning points for next quarter.
Elementary students who earn their full quota of points for all four quarters earn the privilege to a skating party. Those who have earned 150% of their points get to go to the Mud Hens game. We encourage parents to help their children read to succeed. The dividends of being lifelong readers are great. Emmanuel students can also earn reading points during the summer.
Some reading helps for parents:
1) Make sure your children take their books to school each day and bring them home.
2) Encourage your children to read in a non-chaotic environment so they can concentrate.
3) Read with your children each evening before going to bed. It's a wonderful time to bond and share vicarious adventures.
4) Model reading to your children. Get a book from the library too!
