For our third straight year, Emmanuel High School students read a book together as a student body.
This year the faculty chose Gracia Burnham’s book
In the Presence of My Enemies. Martin and Gracia spent 17 years in the Philippines as missionaries with New Tribes Missions. Martin was a jungle pilot. In May 2001, the Burnhams were kidnapped by a militant group of Muslims. For 376 days they faced exhaustion, starvation, gun battles, and deep soul-searching. During a rescue operation in June 2002, all 3 captives were shot. Martin was killed, but wounded Gracia was freed.
Reading Across the Curriculum kicked off just after semester exams. The faculty was excited about the impact In the Presence of My Enemies had on the student body. Special chapels included several missionaries from New Tribes Missions. In addition, students watched a DVD of Gracia Burnham speaking at Cedarville University as well as the movie “EE-TAOW” Students gave testimony in the final chapel about what they had learned and how they had been impacted.
